Tripura’s fish production has crossed 94,000 metric tonnes (MT), marking a significant rise in recent years, Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das said on Thursday.
The announcement came after a state-level review meeting of the Fisheries Department, where officials assessed the department’s performance and reviewed the implementation of various schemes.
Das said the meeting focused on achievements during the previous financial year and discussed plans for 2026-27. He added that the department intends to hold review meetings twice a year to monitor progress and identify areas that need improvement.
According to the minister, district-level review meetings will begin next month to evaluate the effectiveness of fisheries programmes and ensure proper utilisation of funds.
Highlighting the growth of the sector, Das said fish production in the state has steadily increased from around 85,000 MT to 89,000 MT and has now crossed 94,000 MT.
He attributed the rise to several state and central government initiatives aimed at boosting aquaculture. These include the construction of new fish ponds, restoration of unused water bodies and other infrastructure development projects for fish farming.
The minister expressed confidence that the department would continue working to increase production, reduce shortcomings and move the state closer to self-sufficiency in fish production.
Tripura has been actively promoting fisheries development to support local livelihoods, strengthen rural incomes and reduce dependence on fish imports from other states.
