Jaishankar urges Iran FM to ensure safety of commercial shipping and seafarers

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Friday said he held a telephonic conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, during which he expressed India’s deep concern over the ongoing hostilities in the region and stressed that commercial ships and seafarers should never be targeted.

Sharing details of the conversation in a post on X, Jaishankar said India strongly condemns attacks on commercial vessels and seafarers, regardless of who is responsible.

“I had a tele-conversation with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi this evening and conveyed our deep concern over the current situation in the region,” he said.

Jaishankar added that he urged all sides to ensure the safety of commercial shipping and seafarers under all circumstances. “India condemns any such attack by any party,” he said.

The minister also said Araghchi briefed him on Iran’s position regarding the latest developments and the ongoing discussions. Reiterating India’s stand, Jaishankar said the country continues to support dialogue and diplomacy as the best way to resolve the situation.
