Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday described the Northeast as a vital pillar of India’s security, prosperity and strategic strength, saying the region holds a key place in the country’s national security framework as well as its foreign policy priorities.
Addressing a gathering in Shillong, Singh said the eastern region is closely tied to India’s strategic future, where borders, rivers, cultures and communities remain deeply connected.
“I believe this entire region is an integral part of India’s strategic destiny. When we speak of the East, we are not just referring to a location on the map, but to a region where history, geography, security and the future come together,” he said.
Highlighting the role of the Eastern Command, the Defence Minister said its contribution is crucial in protecting national interests and ensuring peace and stability in the eastern sector.
He also said the Northeast should be seen not merely as a border region but as a major force driving India’s security, economic development and strategic influence. According to Singh, the region plays an important role in advancing the Act East Policy, which aims to boost connectivity, trade and cooperation with Southeast Asian countries.
Singh further noted that as India’s global influence continues to expand amid an evolving world order, the strategic significance of the Northeast is expected to grow even stronger.
He added that the region’s unique geographical location makes it central to improving regional connectivity, strengthening border infrastructure and deepening ties with neighbouring Southeast Asian nations.
