Union Home Ministry Plans Major Visa Reform, Proposes Reducing Categories

Proposed Overhaul to Cut Visa Application Form Fields by 70%, Simplify Procedures and Make the System More Applicant-Friendly

The Union Home Ministry is planning a comprehensive overhaul of India’s visa framework, proposing to reduce the number of major visa categories from 13 to nine and cut the number of fields in visa application forms by nearly 70 per cent.

The proposed reforms are aimed at simplifying the visa application process, eliminating unnecessary procedural requirements and making India’s visa system more accessible and user-friendly, officials said on Wednesday, November 4.

The changes are part of a comprehensive review of the existing Visa Manual, 2019, which governs the country’s visa-related procedures and classifications.

Visa Categories and Sub-Categories to Be Rationalised

Under the proposed restructuring, the number of visa sub-categories will be reduced from 49 to 23. The move is intended to consolidate overlapping classifications and simplify the process through which different types of visas are issued.

A meeting held in August discussed proposed amendments to various chapters and Appendices I and II of the Visa Manual, 2019. The discussions focused on streamlining the existing framework and removing unnecessary procedural complexities.

70% Reduction in Application Form Fields

One of the major components of the proposed reform is the simplification of visa application forms.

The government plans to eliminate nearly 70 per cent of the existing form fields by removing repetitive, overlapping and redundant information requirements.

The proposed changes are expected to reduce the time and effort required from applicants while making the application process less cumbersome.

Reforms Across Visa Categories

Officials indicated that the proposed rationalisation would cover all major visa categories and sub-categories, with the objective of bringing India’s visa procedures closer to international practices.

If implemented, the reforms could significantly simplify the country’s visa administration, reduce paperwork and improve the overall experience for applicants.

The proposed overhaul reflects the government’s broader efforts to modernise administrative procedures and make India a more accessible destination for international visitors, professionals, business travellers and investors.
