The Hynñiewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), East Khasi Hills, has urged the district administration to prevent the construction of Durga Puja pandals on major roads and public thoroughfares in Shillong during the upcoming festive season.
In a representation submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills on September 29, HNYF East Khasi Hills president Steveson Raymond Khryiem highlighted concerns over traffic congestion and disruption caused by roadside pandals in different parts of the city.
The organisation pointed to areas such as RR Colony-Rynjah, Laban, Polo, Rilbong and the Garikhana-Umshyrpi stretch, where temporary structures along busy roads could restrict vehicle movement and create difficulties for commuters.
HNYF said it has no objection to the celebration of Durga Puja, but stressed that major public roads should remain free for regular movement. According to the organisation, roadside pandals can affect motorists, pedestrians and local residents, particularly during the festive period.
The youth body has therefore appealed to the district administration to ensure that major roads remain accessible and that temporary structures erected for celebrations do not obstruct traffic or cause inconvenience to the public.
