The United States and Iran are reportedly close to finalising a diplomatic agreement aimed at ending the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict, raising hopes of a possible ceasefire after months of escalating tensions across the Middle East.
According to international media reports, U.S. President Donald Trump said that a deal to end the war was “largely negotiated”, with discussions focusing on a ceasefire framework, reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and renewed talks over Iran’s nuclear programme.
The proposed agreement is expected to include a 60-day ceasefire extension, easing restrictions on Iranian oil exports, and lifting the blockade on Iranian ports. In exchange, Iran would reportedly enter negotiations on limits to uranium enrichment and provide assurances regarding nuclear weapons development.
The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest oil shipping routes, remains a key point in the negotiations. While the U.S. has claimed the deal would ensure uninterrupted maritime movement through the strategic waterway, Iranian officials have maintained that Tehran would continue to exercise authority over the strait.
Pakistan is said to be playing a major mediating role in the negotiations. Reports suggest that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir have been involved in facilitating communication between Washington and Tehran. Islamabad is also expected to host further rounds of talks in the coming days.
The conflict intensified earlier this year following joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iranian targets, triggering retaliatory missile attacks, disruption of Gulf shipping routes, and fears of a broader regional war involving multiple Middle Eastern nations.
Although both sides have indicated progress, several contentious issues remain unresolved, especially concerning Iran’s nuclear activities and long-term regional security arrangements. Analysts have cautioned that previous negotiations had also reached advanced stages before eventually collapsing.
The developments are being closely watched by the international community amid concerns over global oil supply, regional stability, and the humanitarian impact of the conflict.
