Sikkim CM Emphasises Aquaculture Development and Conservation of Indigenous Fish Species

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang released Chocolate Mahseer fish into the Rangeet River during the Chirbirey River Fest near Jorethang on Sunday, October 11, emphasising the importance of conserving indigenous fish species and protecting the state’s aquatic biodiversity.

Tamang participated in the fish release programme on the second day of the festival, accompanied by ministers, MLAs and officials at a fish ranching site along the riverbank. The initiative aims to promote freshwater resource conservation and protect river ecosystems.

In a social media post, the Chief Minister described the Chirbirey River Fest as a celebration of Sikkim’s natural beauty, adventurous spirit and cultural identity. He noted that the festival brings communities together through local traditions, tourism activities and events showcasing the state’s natural heritage.

Tamang also highlighted the potential of Sikkim’s freshwater resources to support fisheries and aquaculture, noting that suitable hybrid fish varieties could help improve local livelihoods, strengthen food security and promote sustainable fish farming.

“The introduction and development of hybrid fish varieties, particularly hybrid mahseer and other improved fish strains where suitable, can contribute to local livelihoods, food security, and sustainable fish farming,” he said.

The Chief Minister further emphasised the festival’s role in promoting lesser-known tourist destinations, supporting local communities and encouraging responsible tourism.

The event combines river-based activities, cultural programmes and tourism initiatives while raising awareness about the conservation of Sikkim’s natural resources and the sustainable use of its aquatic ecosystems.
