Former India captain Rohit Sharma has spoken about his long association with Virat Kohli, saying the two have shared a good bond since the early days of their international careers.
Speaking ahead of India’s second ODI against the West Indies in Guwahati, Rohit recalled how his relationship with Kohli developed during India’s tour of Australia and continued over the years.
Rohit made his international debut in 2007, while Kohli made his debut a year later in 2008. According to Rohit, their long careers have helped them understand the demands and pressures of international cricket.
“Both of us, we’ve almost started playing at the same time. I made my debut in 2007; he made his debut in 2008. And since then, we’ve been trying to give our best for the team,” Rohit said.
He said the two share a strong camaraderie and understand what it takes to maintain a high level in international cricket.
Rohit also said Kohli’s approach to the game has remained more or less the same despite their changing roles over the years. According to him, Kohli is still focused on preparing well, scoring runs and helping India win matches.
“When he was captain, pretty much the same. When I was captain, pretty much the same. And I don’t see any reason why anything needs to change,” he said.
Rohit further revealed that he and Kohli often discuss their batting and give each other suggestions when they feel there is something that can be improved.
He also pointed out that their lives have changed now, with both spending more time at home compared to their earlier years when they were constantly travelling for cricket.
“Until a year ago, every 5-7 days we were on tour, so we didn’t get much time at home. Now both of us are spending more time at home, which is always nice,” Rohit said.
India will take on the West Indies in the second ODI at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati at 2 pm on September 30.
