Narendra Modi says no state will lose representation under Women’s Reservation plan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, April 6, addressed concerns over the proposed implementation of the Women’s Reservation Act, saying the move would not cut down representation for any state — including those with lower population growth in the Northeast and southern parts of the country.

Speaking at a public rally in Barpeta, he mentioned that the Union government has called a special session of Parliament from April 16 to push the legislation forward. He also said discussions had already been held with various political parties and urged everyone to come together to support the bill.

Modi pointed out that fears about states that have followed population control measures losing out were unnecessary. According to him, the proposed plan has safeguards to ensure that such states are not affected in terms of representation.

“The government has called a special session of Parliament from April 16. We have spoken to all political parties and requested them to work together on this law related to women’s rights,” he said. He also added that some people are trying to create confusion around the issue.

He further clarified that the plan is meant to benefit all states equally. “No state will face any loss — whether it’s the Northeast or southern India. Their representation will remain intact. We are planning to increase the total number of seats to make space for more women,” he added.

The Prime Minister also appealed to the people, especially women in Assam, to encourage leaders from all parties to support the bill.

The Women’s Reservation Act aims to increase women’s representation in legislative bodies and has long been debated, especially regarding its impact on seat distribution and the federal structure.
