Meghalaya Inaugurates First High-Performance Sports Science Centre in Shillong

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has inaugurated the state’s first High-Performance Sports Science Centre in Shillong, marking a step towards strengthening sports infrastructure and improving athlete development through scientific training, performance analysis and rehabilitation.

Established in collaboration with Abhinav Futuristics, an initiative associated with Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra, the centre brings sports science, performance analytics, training support and rehabilitation services under one roof.

Sangma said the initiative reflects the state government’s vision of building a comprehensive sporting ecosystem, spanning grassroots talent identification to elite-level performance. The facility is intended to provide athletes with access to modern resources and scientific expertise to help them compete at national and international levels.

The chief minister said Meghalaya aims to win medals at major sporting competitions while pursuing a broader goal of making sports an integral part of everyday life and establishing the state as a leading sporting destination.

The centre is expected to support athletes through science-based training, performance monitoring and recovery programmes. By integrating these services, the facility aims to strengthen athlete preparation and create a foundation for nurturing future sporting talent across the state.

“The champions of tomorrow begin with the foundations we build today,” Sangma said, emphasising the importance of investing in sports infrastructure and long-term athlete development.

The inauguration marks a new phase in Meghalaya’s efforts to develop its sporting capabilities, with the centre expected to contribute to improved training standards and more systematic support for athletes aspiring to compete at higher levels.
