Indian Embassy in France Issues Safety Advisory for Indians Amid Violent Protests

The Indian Embassy in Paris has issued a safety advisory for Indian nationals residing in France and those planning to travel to the country, urging them to remain vigilant amid demonstrations, incidents of violence and localised curfews.

In an advisory issued on Wednesday evening, the embassy asked Indian citizens to avoid protest sites and crowded areas, follow instructions from French authorities and monitor official updates for information about security restrictions and possible transport disruptions.

“In view of the recent developments and localised curfews imposed in France, please remain vigilant and exercise due caution,” the advisory stated.

Indian nationals requiring emergency assistance have been asked to contact the Embassy of India in Paris at +33 6 48 34 00 63 or email cons.paris@mea.gov.in.

Similar Advisory Issued in Italy

The advisory follows a similar warning issued by the Indian Embassy in Italy earlier this week amid protests linked to the rising cost of living and concerns over public services. Indian nationals there were also advised to avoid crowded places, stay away from demonstrations and follow local news and official instructions.

Protests Reported Across French Cities

France has witnessed renewed demonstrations over concerns relating to the cost of living, public services and education. According to the information provided, protests in Paris, Marseille, Lyon and other cities have been accompanied by incidents of looting, arson and clashes between demonstrators and police.

High school students have raised concerns over inadequate funding, poor infrastructure and staff shortages, particularly in disadvantaged neighbourhoods. They have also criticised lengthy school days and questioned aspects of the university admissions system.

Although two consecutive nights of relative calm were reported following the weekend’s unrest, restrictions and localised curfews remained in force in some areas. Further demonstrations were reportedly planned for Thursday and Saturday, following calls from student unions and groups associated with the Yellow Vest movement, which led to widespread protests in 2018 and 2019.

Paris police also announced a ban on a demonstration scheduled for Thursday, citing public safety concerns and the potential for property damage.

France Announces Tighter Security Measures

French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin said on Wednesday that 174 of the 2,500 people detained during and after the protests had been jailed, while another 917 had been formally prosecuted.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu met union representatives and announced plans for a large-scale security operation on Saturday. The operation aims to prevent further violence and address security concerns arising from the unrest.

As French authorities continue to respond to the demonstrations, the Indian Embassy has urged nationals to exercise caution, avoid affected areas and rely on official communications for updates on local restrictions and transport services.
