Empty Chairs at Kannauj Meet Prompt Akhilesh Yadav to Dissolve Samajwadi Party’s District Unit

The Samajwadi Party (SP) has frequently targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over poorly attended rallies and empty chairs at public meetings. However, a similar situation has now put the opposition party on the defensive in Kannauj, the parliamentary constituency represented by SP chief Akhilesh Yadav.

A poorly attended PDA workers’ conference has triggered a major organisational shake-up, with the party dissolving its entire Kannauj district unit and removing leaders from various organisational posts.

Poor Turnout Sparks Political Embarrassment

The controversy began at a PDA workers’ conference organised by Samajwadi Party state president Shyamlal Pal at the party office in Kannauj. Although the venue was prepared with hundreds of chairs, the turnout fell well short of expectations.

Videos circulating on social media showed party leaders and office-bearers seated on the stage, while many chairs in front of them remained vacant. The audience appeared considerably smaller than the number of leaders present on the dais.

The visuals quickly spread online, turning what was intended to be an organisational programme into a political embarrassment for the party.

The location added to the significance of the incident. Kannauj has long been associated with Akhilesh Yadav and his family, with both Akhilesh and his wife, Dimple Yadav, having represented the constituency in the Lok Sabha. Akhilesh is the sitting MP.

A Setback for the PDA Outreach

The PDA slogan, referring to Pichhda, Dalit and Alpsankhyak (backward classes, Dalits and minorities), is a central element of the Samajwadi Party’s political outreach.

The poor attendance at the Kannauj conference gave the BJP an opportunity to question the effectiveness of that outreach. BJP leaders reportedly used the visuals to argue that the party’s PDA messaging was not translating into sufficient public participation.

For the SP, the episode raised concerns beyond the optics of empty chairs. It also highlighted questions about the ability of local leaders to mobilise party workers for a programme led by the state president.

Entire District Unit Dissolved

Following the controversy, the Samajwadi Party dissolved its Kannauj district unit and removed leaders holding various organisational positions.

The decision signals the leadership’s intention to hold local office-bearers accountable for organisational performance, particularly when major party programmes fail to attract an expected turnout.

The action also reinforces the message that proximity to the party chief should not shield local leaders from organisational accountability.

Earlier Organisational Shake-ups

Kannauj is not the first district where Akhilesh Yadav has opted for sweeping organisational changes following controversy or internal disputes.

In Etah and Kasganj, the party previously dissolved district units following tensions involving senior local leaders. The disputes reportedly exposed competing centres of influence and disagreements over organisational control and ticket distribution.

In Gorakhpur, a separate controversy involving an alleged assault between two SP members during a party programme prompted another organisational shake-up after a video of the incident circulated on social media.

Although the circumstances differed, the responses followed a similar pattern: dissolving district-level organisations rather than limiting action to individual members.

A Test of Party Organisation

The Kannauj episode highlights a challenge for the Samajwadi Party: maintaining effective grassroots mobilisation while managing local leadership structures and competing centres of influence.

Dissolving the district unit may allow the leadership to reorganise the local structure and reinforce discipline. However, rebuilding an effective organisation will depend on whether the party can improve coordination, strengthen its local cadre and generate greater participation in future programmes.

For a party that has often used images of empty chairs to criticise the BJP, the Kannauj conference has produced an uncomfortable reversal. The incident has handed its political rival an opportunity to question the strength of its organisational machinery in a constituency closely associated with its own leadership.
