Delhi Police De-Notifies Jantar Mantar as Protest Venue, Designates Three Alternative Sites

Delhi Police has removed Jantar Mantar from the list of designated protest venues and designated three alternative locations for demonstrations in the national capital, according to an official order issued on October 11.

Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar identified Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in East Delhi as the new designated venues for protests and demonstrations.

According to the order, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs had constituted a committee to assess alternative locations where citizens could exercise their right to organise peaceful protests and demonstrations.

Acting on the committee’s recommendations, the police de-notified Jantar Mantar as an officially designated protest venue, the order stated.

The police said a revised standard operating procedure (SOP) would be issued separately, detailing the arrangements and guidelines for organising demonstrations at the three newly designated locations.

The latest directive partially modifies Standing Order No. L&O/48/22, dated April 28, 2022, which governed the previous arrangements for designated protest sites in Delhi.

The decision comes amid heightened security measures in the national capital following calls for people to gather at Jantar Mantar to participate in protests.
