“Community power will win, not money,” says Pradyot Debbarma ahead of TTAADC polls

Tipra Motha Party founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma on April 7 said that “money power will not win” in the upcoming Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, asserting that “community power” will secure a strong victory.

Addressing an election rally in Bankul in South Tripura, Debbarma described the contest as a battle between grassroots unity and the financial strength of the BJP.

He said his campaign is focused on the struggles of marginalised indigenous communities rather than party politics. “I am not fighting for myself or for Tipra Motha. I am fighting for my poor indigenous people — those who have no jobs, no food, and are becoming landless. I am fighting for your rights,” he told the crowd.

Taking a dig at Chief Minister Manik Saha, Debbarma questioned the government’s approach to development. He said basic needs like water, electricity, roads and a secure future for children should come before asking for votes. He also stressed the need for unity among indigenous groups, saying divisions should not weaken their collective strength.

He further raised concerns about the BJP’s manifesto, alleging that the word “Tribal” had been dropped and hinting at a possible move to rename the autonomous council. Questioning the intent, he suggested it reflects a shift away from tribal identity.

Drawing a clear contrast, Debbarma said the election is between BJP’s “money power” and Tipra Motha’s “community power”, adding that this time money alone will not decide the outcome.

He also reiterated his stand against aligning with the BJP, linking it to unfulfilled promises under the Tiprasa Accord. “We made the right decision by not joining hands with them. I would rather die than betray my people,” he said, adding that his focus is on securing rights and resources for indigenous communities.

“I don’t need a job, money or property. My aim is to ensure these for you. I want my indigenous people to be the rightful owners of Tripura,” he added.

The remarks come at a time when campaigning for the TTAADC elections is picking up pace, with issues of identity and development taking centre stage.
