A possible professional rivalry in the rap music scene is among the factors being considered in connection with the recent attack on Sikkimese rapper Ugen Namgyal Bhutia, popularly known as UNB, and members of his team in Arunachal Pradesh.
UNB’s manager, Deep Dhar, said the exact motive behind the incident has not yet been established. He noted that rivalries are not uncommon in the music industry, but stressed that the circumstances surrounding the September 21 attack remain under investigation.
The incident occurred on September 21 when UNB, Dhar and other members of the team were travelling from Anini towards Roing in Lower Dibang Valley.
According to details emerging during the investigation, the group was allegedly followed by two vehicles before their vehicle was intercepted at an isolated location around 39 km from Roing. The attackers allegedly damaged the vehicle with an iron rod and assaulted UNB and his manager before leaving the area after another vehicle arrived.
UNB sustained injuries to his head and face, including swelling around one of his eyes. The remote location and limited mobile connectivity reportedly posed initial challenges for the police in responding to and investigating the incident.
The rapper and his team were subsequently brought to safety, while police began examining the circumstances surrounding the attack and identifying those allegedly involved.
Chief Ministers Intervene
The incident also led to intervention by the governments of Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang contacted Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu following the incident and sought measures to ensure the safety of Sikkimese people travelling to or residing in Arunachal Pradesh.
Dhar expressed gratitude to both chief ministers for their intervention and said their efforts contributed to the safe rescue of the team.
Despite the incident, Dhar said UNB’s association with Arunachal Pradesh remains positive. He described the state as one of the rapper’s strongest audiences.
According to Dhar, the team has already received fresh enquiries from Arunachal Pradesh and intends to continue performing and organising events in the state.
The motive behind the attack, however, remains unconfirmed, and further details are expected as the police investigation progresses.
