Alleged Pulwama attack mastermind Hamza Burhan shot dead in PoK

Hamza Burhan, believed to be one of the key conspirators behind the 2019 Pulwama terror attack that killed more than 40 CRPF personnel, was reportedly shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Muzaffarabad on May 21.

According to sources, the incident took place in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the killing.

The Pulwama attack happened on February 14, 2019, when a suicide bomber drove an explosives-filled vehicle into a convoy of CRPF personnel travelling on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway near Lethapora in Pulwama district.

The attack killed 40 CRPF jawans along with the suicide bomber, later identified as Adil Ahmad Dar, a resident of Pulwama. Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed had claimed responsibility for the attack.

The incident had sharply escalated tensions between India and Pakistan and later led to the 2019 military standoff between the two countries.

Following the attack, Indian investigating agencies identified several people allegedly involved in the conspiracy. By August 2021, many of the accused, including some key operatives, had either been arrested or killed during anti-terror operations.
