Mamata Banerjee Detained in Delhi During Jantar Mantar Protest

Delhi Police detained Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairperson Mamata Banerjee and several senior party leaders on Saturday following a sit-in protest near her South Avenue residence in New Delhi.

Banerjee, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal, staged a dharna at a nearby bus stand in support of the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar.

The demonstration comes amid opposition demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the voter list revision process.

According to security officials, the leaders were taken into custody after they allegedly refused to vacate the area, citing restrictions on unlawful assembly.

Several senior TMC leaders, including MPs Derek O’Brien, Saket Gokhale and Dola Sen, were also detained during the police operation. Personnel from Delhi Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were involved in the action.

The detentions have added to the political tensions surrounding the protests in the national capital, with opposition groups continuing to raise concerns over the electoral process and demand accountability from the Election Commission.

Further details regarding the detentions and the parties’ next course of action are awaited.
