In a tragic road accident near the Indo-Bangladesh border in Tripura’s Longtarai Valley subdivision of Dhalai district, four labourers were killed and six others were injured after a truck carrying stone chips overturned late on Sunday evening, May 17.
Longtarai Valley Sub-divisional Police Officer Sonacharan Jamatia told India Today NE that the truck was travelling from Chawmanu to Biju Border Out Post with stone chips meant for infrastructure work near the international border.
According to Jamatia, the accident happened when the truck tried to climb a steep stretch of road that was reportedly in poor condition. The vehicle failed to move uphill and overturned while reversing.
He said four labourers who were sitting on top of the pile of stone chips were thrown onto the road, and moments later, the load collapsed on them, burying them underneath. All four died on the spot. Those travelling inside the truck cabin survived the crash.
Personnel from nearby Border Security Force posts rushed to the spot and began rescue operations soon after the accident.
The injured were taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors confirmed that four labourers had died.
The deceased have been identified as Balidhanjoy Tripura (47), Majida Tripura (50), Bathojoy Tripura (39), and Narjoy Tripura (36).
Six people were injured in the accident, and officials said one of them remains in critical condition. Most of the injured were travelling inside the truck cabin at the time of the incident.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation.
