Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 27 extended birthday greetings to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, lauding his work and commitment to the people of the state.
Taking to X, the Prime Minister wrote, “Birthday wishes to Meghalaya Chief Minister Shri Conrad Sangma Ji. His efforts to fulfil the aspirations of Meghalaya’s people are noteworthy. I pray for his long life and good health.”
Sangma responded by quoting the post, thanking the Prime Minister for his blessings. “Thank you Hon’ble Prime Minister, @narendramodi ji. May God bless you,” he wrote.
Several other chief ministers also sent their wishes. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis wished Sangma a long and healthy life, while Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised his leadership, saying that Meghalaya was scaling “new heights of progress and prosperity” under his guidance. Sarma also offered prayers for Sangma’s well-being.
The greetings underline Sangma’s growing national stature as he continues his second consecutive term as chief minister. The National People’s Party (NPP) chief was sworn in again in March 2023 after his party emerged as the single largest force in the Meghalaya Assembly elections.
The NPP won 26 seats and went on to form the government with its alliance partners, taking the total strength of the ruling coalition to 45 MLAs, including two from the BJP. Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar were sworn in as deputy chief ministers.
Sangma represents the South Tura constituency, which he retained by a margin of 5,016 votes against BJP candidate Bernard N Marak, according to data from the Election Commission of India.
