Tripura woman assaulted, publicly humiliated over alleged extramarital affair

A woman was allegedly assaulted and publicly humiliated by a group of villagers in Tripura’s Dhalai district over suspicion of an extramarital relationship, police said on December 28.

The victim, a mother of two sons, was reportedly dragged out of her house at Harerkhola village under Kamalpur police station on Saturday morning and beaten by the group. She was also allegedly forced to wear a garland made of shoes, adding to the public humiliation.

After receiving information about the incident, police rushed to the spot and found the woman lying on the road. She was later taken to the district hospital in Ambassa, where doctors conducted a CT scan. “Her condition is stable and she is out of danger,” a police officer said.

A case has been registered at Kamalpur police station against several individuals in connection with the incident, and an investigation is underway. One person has been arrested so far, officials confirmed.

The Tripura Commission for Women (TCW) strongly condemned the incident. TCW Chairperson Jharna Debbarma said police have already registered a specific case and arrested one of the accused.

“We strongly condemn the torture and humiliation of the woman. No one has the right to take the law into their own hands. I urge the police to take strict action against everyone involved,” Debbarma said.

She also said that a TCW team will visit Kamalpur on December 29 to meet the victim. “The Commission has a responsibility in such cases, and we will make every effort to ensure justice for the woman,” she added.
