Sikkim BJP leader congratulates Nitin Nabin, flags border concerns

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Chief Advisor to the BJP’s Sikkim unit, Tseten Tashi Bhutia, on Tuesday extended his congratulations to Nitin Nabin on his appointment as the BJP’s national president. In a statement, Bhutia said he was confident that Nabin’s leadership would help the party navigate key national challenges.

Bhutia recalled Nabin’s earlier role as the BJP’s in-charge for Sikkim, saying it gave him direct exposure to the state’s unique demographic composition, constitutional safeguards and border-related sensitivities. “Our interactions during that period helped him understand Sikkim’s ground realities in depth,” Bhutia said.

Highlighting Sikkim’s strategic importance due to its location along sensitive international borders, Bhutia said demographic stability and the protection of indigenous communities must remain national priorities. He underlined the importance of strictly upholding the 1975 Terms of Merger, the Tripartite Agreement of May 8, 1973, and Article 371F of the Constitution to ensure lasting stability in the region.

Bhutia cautioned that any dilution of these constitutional and legal safeguards could adversely impact border management, social harmony and India’s strategic interests in the eastern Himalayas.

Calling on Nabin to give due importance to Sikkim’s concerns, Bhutia said issues such as demographic protection, border security and the preservation of the state’s special constitutional status must remain central to the party’s approach.
