Priyanka Chaturvedi raises alarm over Grok misuse, writes to IT minister

Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has written to Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw, raising concerns over what she called a disturbing trend on social media platform X involving the misuse of its AI feature, Grok, to harass and sexualise women.

In a letter dated January 1, 2026, Chaturvedi said men were allegedly operating fake accounts to upload photographs of women and generate prompts instructing Grok to reduce their clothing and sexualise their appearance. She pointed out that the misuse was not confined to fabricated profiles, but also extended to women who share their own photographs on the platform.

“This is unacceptable and a gross misuse of an AI function,” Chaturvedi wrote, stating that the tool was effectively enabling such behaviour by responding to these prompts. She said this amounted to a serious violation of women’s right to privacy and the unauthorised use of their images, describing the practice as unethical and “also criminal”.

Writing in her capacity as a member of the Standing Committee on Information Technology and Communication, the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader urged the minister to take up the issue firmly with X and ensure that robust safeguards are built into AI-driven applications to make digital platforms safer for women.

“Our country cannot be a silent bystander to women’s dignity being violated publicly and digitally under the guise of creativity and innovation,” she said, stressing that such prompts should not be permitted or normalised.

Chaturvedi further cautioned that similar patterns of misuse were emerging across other major technology platforms and were largely going unchecked. Calling for urgent intervention, she said India must prioritise protecting women from becoming victims of what she described as “openly criminal practices” that intimidate, silence and push them out of online spaces.

While acknowledging the role of artificial intelligence in improving lives, she said the government must ensure that technological progress does not lead to the spread of demeaning and harmful acts against women. She expressed hope that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology would engage with big tech companies and put stronger safeguards in place.
