Modi visits Swahid Smarak Kshetra, honours martyrs of Assam Agitation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 21 paid homage to the martyrs of the Assam Agitation at the newly inaugurated Swahid Smarak Kshetra, describing the movement as a turning point in Assam’s political and social history.

The memorial honours 860 people who lost their lives during the six-year anti-foreigners’ agitation that ended in 1985. A perpetual flame has been lit at the site as a symbol of their sacrifice and resilience.

During his visit, the Prime Minister, accompanied by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and senior officials, toured the martyrs’ gallery, where busts of those who died during the agitation have been installed. He also offered floral tributes at the statue of Khargeswar Talukdar, regarded as the first martyr of the movement, who was killed on December 10, 1979.

Officials said the memorial has been constructed at a cost of ₹170 crore and is envisioned not only as a place of remembrance but also as a public space. The complex features water bodies, an auditorium, a prayer hall, a cycle track and facilities for a sound-and-light show showcasing key moments of the Assam Agitation and the state’s history.

The Prime Minister’s visit underscored the Centre’s focus on preserving the legacy of the Assam Agitation, which continues to hold deep significance in the state’s collective memory.
