Tripura BJP General Secretary Bipin Debbarma on Sunday said Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha has taken the murder of Anjel Chakma in Uttarakhand with utmost seriousness and is pursuing the matter both administratively and in coordination with the Uttarakhand government.
Debbarma described the incident as extremely painful, stating that it has shocked and saddened people across Tripura.
“The incident involving Anjel Chakma on December 9 has deeply shaken all of us. I pray for the departed soul and extend my condolences to the bereaved family,” he said.
He pointed out that Anjel was pursuing his studies in Uttarakhand and said the circumstances under which the incident took place were deeply disturbing.
Debbarma said Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha has already spoken to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on the issue. “Those responsible for this incident will not be spared. The Uttarakhand Chief Minister has also addressed the matter publicly on X,” he added.
Responding to criticism, Debbarma said blaming the government was unjustified and stressed that extensive development work is underway in the region.
“Students not just from Tripura but from across the North East go there to study. Such incidents should never happen. I want to assure everyone that the Tripura Chief Minister is closely monitoring the situation from an administrative level. The Uttarakhand Chief Minister has also assured strict action,” he said.
Anjel Chakma, an MBA student, died after allegedly being attacked in a racially motivated incident in Dehradun. He and his brother Michael were reportedly assaulted by a group of men near a liquor shop on December 9 following an altercation that began after racial remarks were allegedly made. Anjel later succumbed to his injuries on Friday.
