JD Vance says intruder tried to break into Ohio home; family away

A security scare was reported late at night at the Ohio residence of US Vice President JD Vance after an unidentified man allegedly attempted to break in by smashing windows, triggering an immediate response from the US Secret Service and Cincinnati police.

The incident took place at Vance’s home on William Howard Taft Drive in the East Walnut Hills area. According to local officials, a US Secret Service officer alerted Cincinnati police around 12.15 am after noticing a person running eastbound near the property. Police teams and Secret Service personnel were quickly deployed, and a suspect was detained shortly afterwards.

Images from the scene showed broken windows at the residence. Authorities have not revealed the identity of the detained individual or a possible motive. Officials said there was no indication that the suspect succeeded in entering the vice president’s home.

Confirming the incident, Vance said in a post on X that his family was not present at the residence at the time. “As far as I can tell, a crazy person tried to break in by hammering the windows,” he wrote, adding that he and his family were already back in Washington, DC. He also thanked the Secret Service and local police for their swift response.

The vice president urged caution in reporting the incident, saying his family tries to protect their children from the harsh realities of public life. “I’m skeptical about the news value of circulating images of our home with holes in the windows,” he said.

Authorities later said there is no ongoing threat and that the matter is under investigation.
