Iceland Cricket trolls Pakistan over T20 World Cup uncertainty: “We’re ready to step in”

Iceland Cricket Trolls Pakistan Amid T20 World Cup Speculation

Iceland Cricket added a touch of humour to the ongoing T20 World Cup drama by poking fun at Pakistan amid swirling talk of a possible boycott. The light-hearted post came as off-field tension continued to build following Bangladesh’s withdrawal from the tournament and sharp remarks from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Sharing the post on social media, Iceland Cricket joked about the uncertainty surrounding Pakistan’s participation. “We really need Pakistan to decide soon upon their participation in the T20 WC. We are ready to take off as soon as they pull out on 2nd Feb, but the flight schedule is a logistical nightmare to get us to Colombo in good time for 7th Feb. Our opening bat is an insomniac!” the quirky message read, drawing laughs from cricket fans worldwide.

The serious backdrop

The humour comes amid a tense situation. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi recently criticised the International Cricket Council (ICC) for removing Bangladesh from the tournament after they refused to travel to India over security concerns. Naqvi argued that Bangladesh, as a full ICC member, should have received the same concessions as Pakistan, which plays India-based ICC matches at neutral venues.

The ICC, however, defended its decision, saying independent security assessments by internal and external experts found no credible threat to Bangladesh’s players, officials, or supporters in India. Since Bangladesh refused to travel despite these assurances, the ICC replaced them with Scotland.

Pakistan’s position and ICC warning

Naqvi’s comments have sparked speculation over whether Pakistan might consider a last-minute boycott, despite the PCB naming a 15-member squad for the tournament a day later. Sources told India Today that the ICC has already warned Pakistan of severe sanctions if they attempt to withdraw, noting that such a move could have long-term consequences for Pakistan cricket across formats.

For the 2026 T20 World Cup, Pakistan is following the same hybrid model used in previous India-based ICC events, with all their matches scheduled in Colombo. Naqvi has insisted that Bangladesh should have been offered a similar arrangement, saying no country should be allowed to dictate terms to another—a remark widely seen as a subtle jab at India.

Key clash ahead

Pakistan and India are scheduled to face each other on February 15 in Colombo, with both teams placed in Group A.
