“I have a tiger’s gaze”: Macron jokes about red eye, sparks online buzz

French President Emmanuel Macron turned a minor medical issue into an unexpected viral moment after appearing with a visibly red and bloodshot right eye during a speech to the country’s armed forces, sparking a mix of concern, jokes and memes online.

Macron arrived at a ceremony at the Istres military base in southern France on Wednesday wearing sunglasses, briefly fuelling speculation about his health. He soon removed them to address the troops and chose to acknowledge the issue upfront.

“Please excuse the unsightly appearance of my eye,” the French President said at the start of his address, before defusing the moment with humour by calling it an “unintentional reference to the Eye of the Tiger”, a nod to the iconic Rocky III theme song.

Images and video of Macron’s puffy red eye quickly spread across social media, prompting questions about his well-being. The Elysee Palace later clarified that the President had suffered a ruptured blood vessel in his eye, stressing that the condition was harmless and temporary.

Macron continued to lean into the moment, joking with staff while wearing sunglasses and asking them to “accept” him as he was. “I now have the vision of a tiger,” he quipped.

Online reactions were divided. While many praised Macron for handling the situation with humour and confidence, others revived old memes and references involving First Lady Brigitte Macron.

“Classic Macron — turning a red eye into a joke and sunglasses into a style statement,” one user wrote.
“He’s looking cool,” another commented.
“Even a burst blood vessel can’t dim the presidential swagger,” a third post read.

However, a section of social media also veered into crude remarks and personal attacks involving Brigitte Macron.

The chatter echoed a viral clip from May 2025, when Macron dismissed speculation after a video appeared to show his wife playfully pushing his face aside during a public appearance in Vietnam, calling it a harmless moment blown out of proportion.

The episode once again brought back baseless conspiracy theories targeting Brigitte Macron, including claims that she was born a man — allegations that French authorities have repeatedly debunked. Earlier this month, a Paris criminal court convicted 10 individuals for running an online harassment campaign against the First Lady, following a defamation complaint linked to such rumours.

For Macron, the red-eye episode became yet another reminder of how optics, humour and politics intersect in the age of viral leadership — where even a burst blood vessel can dominate the news cycle.
