The Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC) has introduced a new requirement for hospitality establishments operating within its jurisdiction. As per a notice issued by the joint municipal commissioner, all hotels, homestays, guest houses, restaurants, and other tourism-related businesses must register under the Sikkim Registration of Tourist Trade Act, 2024, and its rules, 2025, before applying for or renewing their trade licences.
This mandatory registration aims to regulate tourism-related businesses and streamline the licensing process in Gangtok. The GMC will only process or renew trade licences after verifying the SRRT registration issued by the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department.
Establishments that fail to comply with this requirement may face issues with their trade licence applications. The move is expected to help the GMC better oversee tourism businesses in the area and ensure they meet necessary standards.
The GMC has directed all concerned establishments to adhere to this new requirement. With tourism being a significant contributor to Sikkim’s economy, the regulation is likely part of efforts to manage and promote sustainable tourism practices in the region.
