Dhubri rolls out ‘Surakshit Shishov Sonali Assam’ child safety campaign

The inaugural programme of “Surakshit Shishov Sonali Assam,” a 90-day child protection awareness campaign, was held on Tuesday, December 16, at the auditorium of the Dhubri District Library. The campaign is being organised jointly by the District Child Protection Unit, Dhubri District Administration, District Child Protection Committee and the Women and Child Development Department.

The initiative aims to create mass awareness on child rights and child protection through the collective involvement of all concerned stakeholders.

The programme began with the lighting of a ceremonial lamp before the portrait of noted Assamese singer and artist Zubin Garg, symbolising inspiration and a shared commitment towards the safety and rights of children.

During the event, advocates spoke in detail about various child protection laws in the country, including provisions related to child rights, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and laws dealing with child abuse, child marriage and child labour. Special focus was given to the legal aspects of child marriage and cases of abuse.

Child rights activists also explained the steps to be taken in cases of physical or mental abuse of children, including how to approach the police or the Child Welfare Committee. They highlighted that marriage of a girl below 18 years or a boy below 21 years is a punishable offence under the law.

Participants were also informed about the process of reporting cases of abandoned children and child labour. Officials reminded the audience that cases of child labour can be reported through the toll-free Childline helpline 1098. Students present at the programme took a pledge, stressing the importance of education in building their future and contributing positively to society.

The programme was attended by Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Dipti Mali, Information and Public Relations Officer Snigdha Rani Das, advocates associated with the Assam State Judicial Service Authority, child protection experts, Child Development Project Officers from different sectors, and officials from the Social Welfare Department, District Child Protection Committee and the Women and Child Development Department. Anganwadi workers, teachers and students were also present.

The launch of “Surakshit Shishov Sonali Assam” is being seen as an important step towards strengthening child protection efforts and spreading awareness on child rights across Dhubri district.
