Assam opens tripartite talks with council and protesters to ease West Karbi Anglong unrest: DGP

Assam Director General of Police Harmeet Singh on December 24 said the law and order situation in West Karbi Anglong is “completely under control” following recent unrest and violence in the district. He added that an Army column carried out a route march in the affected areas as part of confidence-building measures.

Speaking on the situation, Singh said the administration was not relying solely on force to restore normalcy and remained open to dialogue. The state government has allowed time for a tripartite meeting involving itself, the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, and representatives of those raising demands.

Detailing the incidents, the DGP said a mob carried out vandalism and arson, during which administrative officials were also attacked. He confirmed that one person from the mob died during the clashes, while another, a differently-abled individual, died after being trapped in a fire set by the mob.

Singh appealed to those involved in the protests to come forward for talks and assist in counselling youth, stressing that violence serves no one. He said security forces, including the Army, police, and central forces, have been deployed across the district to maintain peace.

The DGP added that legal action would be taken against those involved in the violence. Authorities have collected video footage of the incidents, and some individuals have already been identified. Additional security measures remain in place across West Karbi Anglong to prevent any fresh incidents.
