Assam mother flags negligence, broker network after son dies at Guwahati private hospital

A mother has accused a private hospital in Dispur and an alleged broker network of negligence following the death of her 19-year-old son, who was undergoing treatment after a road accident.

The deceased, Rishi Pandit, had met with an accident about two months ago and was first admitted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Doctors there diagnosed him with a serious head injury and reportedly advised the family to shift him to Patna for advanced treatment, which was estimated to cost around Rs 45,000.

However, the family alleged that instead of being taken to Patna, Rishi was diverted by hospital brokers and admitted to Cosmo Medical, a private hospital in Dispur. A technician-cum-broker identified as Babu allegedly convinced the victim’s mother, Monika Deka, that treatment at the private facility would cost less than the amount suggested for Patna.

Rishi was admitted to Cosmo Medical on December 6. As his condition worsened, he was put on ventilator support. Despite this, the hospital authorities allegedly continued to assure the family that his condition was stable.

The grieving mother claimed that over the past 11 days, the hospital repeatedly collected amounts ranging between Rs 8,000 and Rs 10,000 in the name of medicines and medical tests. She alleged that despite these payments, her son’s condition showed no improvement.

On December 17, the hospital reportedly informed the family that Rishi had died.

The mother further alleged that she approached Dispur Police seeking action against the hospital and those involved in the matter but was sent back without any help.

No official statement has been issued so far by the hospital authorities or the police in connection with the allegations.
