MI Begin Rebuild as Mahela Jayawardene’s Exit Fuels Rohit Sharma Captaincy Buzz

Mumbai Indians are preparing for a major reset ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season after Mahela Jayawardene and the franchise mutually agreed to part ways. The development has also sparked fresh speculation over the team’s leadership, with reports suggesting that Rohit Sharma could return as captain.

Jayawardene’s departure marks the end of another significant chapter in his association with Mumbai Indians. The franchise will now focus on reshaping its coaching structure and charting a new course for the upcoming season.

“ Mumbai Indians has been a very special part of my journey for over a decade now. The players, coaching team, the incredible support of the #OneFamily and above all the fans have made this an experience I will always treasure,” Jayawardene said.

MI owner Nita Ambani also acknowledged his contribution, praising his leadership, integrity and commitment to the franchise.

MAHELA’S LEGACY AT MUMBAI INDIANS

Jayawardene first took charge as Mumbai Indians’ head coach in 2017 and guided the team to three IPL titles in 2017, 2019 and 2020. His tactical understanding and role in building a successful team established him as one of the franchise’s most influential figures.

After moving into a broader leadership role in 2022, he oversaw the franchise’s expanding global cricket operations before returning as head coach in 2025.

His exit leaves Mumbai Indians with important decisions to make as they prepare for IPL 2027, particularly regarding their coaching setup and long-term strategy.

ROHIT SHARMA’S CAPTAINCY BACK IN FOCUS

Rohit Sharma’s potential return as captain has emerged as a major talking point. According to earlier media reports, Mumbai’s management has been considering the possibility of handing leadership back to the former skipper.

Rohit led Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020, making him the most successful captain in the franchise’s history.

Hardik Pandya replaced Rohit as captain ahead of IPL 2024 after returning from Gujarat Titans. Mumbai endured a difficult first season under Hardik, finishing at the bottom of the standings, but bounced back to reach the playoffs in 2025.

Despite that recovery, the franchise has not won another IPL title since 2020.

A CRUCIAL PHASE AHEAD OF IPL 2027

Mumbai Indians now face a crucial period as they plan their next campaign. Finalising the coaching structure and deciding on the team’s leadership will be central to their rebuilding process.

While Rohit’s possible return as captain remains a subject of speculation, the franchise’s eventual decisions will shape its preparations for IPL 2027 and its bid to return to championship-winning form.
