Sikkim: Reshi Tunnel Inspection Highlights Pending Safety and Rehabilitation Works

A high-level Tunnel Monitoring Committee has inspected the Reshi Road Tunnel in Sikkim to assess its structural condition, safety arrangements, maintenance status and rehabilitation needs.

The inspection was led by Relief Commissioner-cum-Secretary (LR&DMD) Mingma T Sherpa. The committee identified several works that remain incomplete, particularly those related to drainage, pedestrian safety and structural maintenance.

Focus on Commuter Safety

The committee stressed the need for timely completion of the pending works, considering the tunnel is regularly used by students, local residents and commuters.

Sherpa questioned officials of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) about the safety measures currently being followed at the tunnel. He called for strict adherence to prescribed safety protocols and instructed officials to submit the necessary technical documents to his office.

He also proposed setting up a sub-committee to ensure regular monitoring of the tunnel’s condition and safety arrangements.

Drainage and Pedestrian Walkway Highlighted

Soreng Deputy Commissioner Dhiraj Subedi drew attention to works that directly impact people using the tunnel.

He emphasised the need to properly complete and maintain the drainage system and called for the construction or provision of a safe pedestrian walkway through the tunnel.

NHPC Asked to Complete Pending Works

The committee reviewed the overall structural condition of the tunnel and examined the maintenance and rehabilitation requirements.

Members urged NHPC’s Rangit Stage IV Hydroelectric Project to strengthen safety arrangements and complete the outstanding works within the prescribed timeframe.

NHPC DGM RM Sahoo briefed the committee on the present status of the tunnel and provided details about the Diversion Road Tunnel along SH-22/NH510.

He also presented the proposed rehabilitation measures, equipment requirements and estimated expenditure for the necessary repair and upgradation works.

Officials Participate in Inspection

Representatives from the Mines and Geology Department, Geological Survey of India, Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) and the district administration also participated in the inspection.

The committee’s review is aimed at ensuring that pending safety, maintenance and rehabilitation works are addressed promptly to improve the overall safety of the Reshi tunnel.
