Tripura Traffic Police will soon launch a special drive against vehicles using unauthorised or unsafe lighting systems, citing concerns over excessive glare and modified lights.
The drive will focus on vehicles fitted with high-intensity headlights, modified flashing lights and unauthorised multi-coloured lights, including red, blue and white combinations. Police said such lighting can affect the vision of other motorists, especially those coming from the opposite direction, and may increase the risk of accidents.
Vehicles with dazzling or improperly modified headlights, unapproved flashing systems and lights resembling those used by emergency services or law enforcement agencies will also be checked during the drive.
The Traffic Police said vehicle lighting must comply with the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. Rule 106 deals with requirements for headlamps and their use, while Rule 108 regulates the use of red, white and blue lights and restricts their unauthorised installation.
The department has asked vehicle owners to remove such non-compliant lighting systems and make sure their vehicles follow the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and other applicable rules.
Police said legal action will be taken against violators once the drive begins. Motorists have also been asked to cooperate with the authorities and avoid using lights that cause excessive glare or affect the visibility of other road users.
