The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Tuesday, September 1, told the Supreme Court that it has decided to call off its proposed protest scheduled for September 5 following developments over the closure of FIRs filed against students who took part in the NEET paper leak protests.
CJP co-convenor Saurav Das appeared before a bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, and informed the court about the decision.
During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta urged the Supreme Court to use its powers to close all FIRs registered against NEET protesters across the country between July 20 and 25.
Mehta also said that the Centre would honour its assurance to provide compensation to the families of students who died by suicide following the cancellation of the NEET examination.
The Solicitor General told the court that compensation would be paid to the families of the deceased students and sought three months to finalise the process and modalities for the payments.
The CJP had earlier announced a protest march in Delhi on September 5, coinciding with Teachers’ Day. The group alleged that the Centre had failed to fulfil the assurances made on July 25, following which the CJP had withdrawn its 36-day agitation over alleged examination irregularities and the NEET paper leak.
According to the CJP, the proposed march was expected to be led by the families of students who died by suicide after the NEET exam was cancelled and a re-test was conducted.
Families of students who allegedly faced police excesses during the July agitation were also expected to join the protest.
The development came as the Supreme Court was hearing the matter related to FIRs registered against students who participated in the protests.
