Tripura to begin two-phase census from July 2026; preparedness reviewed

A high-level meeting of the State Level Census Coordination Committee (SLCC) was held at the Tripura Secretariat on March 6 to review the state’s preparedness for the upcoming census, which will be conducted in two phases as part of the nationwide exercise.

The meeting was chaired by Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha and attended by several senior officials, including Finance Secretary Apurba Roy, Urban Development Secretary Milind Ramteke, Panchayat Department Secretary Abhishek Singh, Higher Education Secretary Ravel Hemendra Kumar, Special Secretary and Director of Social Welfare Tapan Kumar Das, and Director of Information and Cultural Affairs Bimbisar Bhattacharya, among others.

During the meeting, Secretary of the Planning and Statistics Department and state census nodal officer L.T. Darlong highlighted the importance of the census and briefed officials on the overall work plan. Director of Census Operations Ratan Biswas presented a detailed overview of the programme and explained that the census will be carried out in two stages.

As per the proposed schedule, self-enumeration will be conducted from July 17 to July 31, 2026. The first phase, which includes housing enumeration and preparation of house lists, will take place from August 1 to August 30, 2026. The second phase focusing on population enumeration will be carried out between February 9 and February 28, 2027.

Addressing the meeting, Sinha emphasised the need to carry out the census exercise with accuracy and diligence. He urged officials to complete all necessary preparations within the stipulated time and assured full cooperation from the state administration for the smooth conduct of the exercise.

District Collectors and Additional District Collectors from various districts also joined the meeting virtually and shared updates on the preparations being made at the district level for the upcoming census.
