Meghalaya Coal Mine Explosion: Two Accused Remanded to 3 Days in Police Custody

Two individuals accused of running illegal coal mines linked to the deadly explosion in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district were produced before a local court in Khliehriat on February 6. The court remanded them to three days of police custody, officials confirmed.
East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar identified the accused as Shamehi War (42) from Sutnga Pohwailong village and Forme Chyrmang (36) from Jalaphet Pyrdung village. Police believe both were involved in the illegal mining operations that allegedly led to the blast, which has so far claimed 25 lives.
“The court has granted three days of police custody for further questioning,” SP Kumar said. He added that the investigation is ongoing and efforts are being made to determine the complete chain of responsibility behind the tragedy.
Police have also named a third suspect in connection with the case. “We are currently searching for the third accused, who is absconding,” Kumar stated.
The explosion at the illegal coal mine has raised serious concerns about unsafe mining practices in the region. Authorities have intensified their probe and assured that strict action will be taken against everyone found responsible.
