Beaten and humiliated: Dehradun college student accuses seniors of ragging

A first-year student at Government Doon Medical College in Dehradun has accused his seniors of physical assault and ragging, triggering a formal inquiry by the institution’s anti-ragging committee.

The matter surfaced after the student submitted a written complaint to the college administration and the chief warden on January 13. The complainant, from the 2025 batch, has alleged harassment and violence by two senior students from the 2024 and 2023 batches.

According to the complaint, the junior student was allegedly beaten with belts and slippers. He further claimed that he was taken outside the college campus, forced to cut his hair against his will, and made to sleep outdoors—actions he described as humiliating and coercive.

Following the complaint, the anti-ragging committee began proceedings and recorded statements from all those involved. College authorities said students found guilty could face suspension.

College principal Dr Geeta Jain said the institute maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards ragging and indiscipline. “Indiscipline will not be tolerated. Statements of the students concerned have been recorded and the matter is being examined thoroughly. Appropriate action will be taken once the inquiry report is finalised,” she said.

Sources told India Today TV that the administration has also informed the parents of the accused students, though no response has been received so far. The complainant has undergone a medical examination, and the inquiry is expected to be completed within a week.
