The first Vande Bharat Sleeper train will soon begin service on the Guwahati–Kolkata route, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Thursday. He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the inaugural journey in the coming days. The launch follows a series of successful trials and is expected to provide faster, more convenient overnight travel options in the region.
Speaking at a press conference, Vaishnaw said the service will benefit not just business travellers but also families, students, and tourists seeking a reliable overnight journey between the two major cities. “The testing and certification of the Vande Bharat Sleeper train have been completed. Its first route will be Guwahati-Kolkata, and Prime Minister Modi will flag off the service soon. The train will offer world-class facilities, enhanced safety, and a modern travel experience for long-distance overnight journeys,” he said.
The final high-speed trial of the indigenously built train was recently conducted on the Kota-Nagda section, during which it reached speeds of up to 180 kmph.
The train will have 16 coaches, including 11 three-tier AC, four two-tier AC, and one first AC coach, with a total passenger capacity of 823 — 611 in 3AC, 188 in 2AC, and 24 in 1AC. Fares have been set at around Rs 2,300 for 3AC (including meals), Rs 3,000 for 2AC, and Rs 3,600 for First AC.
Passengers can expect upgraded features such as ergonomically designed berths with improved cushioning, automatic exterior doors with vestibules, and enhanced ride comfort through superior suspension and noise reduction measures. The coaches also include disinfectant technology to maintain high hygiene standards.
Safety has been a key focus in the design. The Vande Bharat Sleeper is equipped with the Kavach anti-collision system, an emergency talk-back system, and a driver cabin featuring advanced controls. Modern interiors, spacious seating, efficient lighting, and user-friendly amenities aim to set a new benchmark for overnight train travel in India.
With its aerodynamic design and world-class features, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is poised to redefine long-distance overnight travel, offering both comfort and safety for passengers on the Guwahati–Kolkata route.
