Mizoram government decides to locate proposed state university in Lunglei

The Mizoram government has decided to set up the proposed state university in Lunglei town, moving away from its earlier plan to establish the institution in the state capital, Aizawl.

The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, which was attended by ministers, MLAs and senior government officials. To give effect to the decision, the government will bring a Bill in the upcoming Assembly session to amend the Mizoram State University Act, 2025, enabling a change in the university’s location.

Higher and Technical Education Minister Vanlalthlana was present at the meeting along with Lunglei High Powered Committee vice-chairman and local MLA V. Malsawmtluanga, besides two other legislators from the district.

The Mizoram State University Bill, 2025 was passed by the Assembly in March this year in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The policy calls for the establishment of a teaching-intensive university to handle college affiliations within 15 years of its implementation.

While piloting the Bill in the Assembly, Vanlalthlana had earlier said the proposed university would function on a cluster model, bringing several colleges and institutions under a common academic structure. At that time, Aizawl was identified as the likely site. However, the latest decision shifts the focus to Lunglei, paving the way for a major higher education institution in the southern part of the state.
