Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday visited the Gelapukhuri Tea Estate in Tinsukia district, where he met the families of 20 people who lost their lives in a road accident in Arunachal Pradesh’s Anjaw district earlier this month.
During the visit, the Chief Minister offered his condolences to the bereaved families and handed over cheques of ₹5 lakh each as one-time financial assistance on behalf of the Assam government.
He also informed the families that the Government of India would extend additional ex-gratia support of ₹2 lakh to each affected household.
Assuring continued support, Sarma said the state government would take steps to facilitate employment opportunities for members of the deceased workers’ families within the tea estate.
The fatal accident took place on December 8 in Anjaw district, killing 20 people, most of whom were from tea garden worker families of Assam.
