Nongkseh announced themselves as a new force in Meghalaya football with a stunning 2–1 win over Shillong Lajong in the SSA Champions Cup final, coming from behind with two late goals to lift the trophy.
In front of a packed SSA Stadium, where over 12,000 fans created an electric atmosphere, Nongkseh showed grit and belief to end Lajong’s 16-match unbeaten run. The victory also extended Nongkseh’s own streak to 15 matches in SSA competitions this season.
Shillong Lajong took the lead in the 27th minute through Babysunday Marngar, who capitalised on a defensive lapse and finished calmly after a poor clearance fell straight to him. Lajong controlled much of the first half, reading the game well and restricting Nongkseh to limited chances.
Nongkseh’s fortunes changed after the break with the introduction of Shano Tariang. Returning to the side after a spell out, his presence brought balance to midfield and allowed Nongkseh to push higher up the pitch. However, Lajong goalkeeper Wanteilang Malngiang kept his team in front with a string of fine saves.
Deep into eight minutes of stoppage time, Kynsaibor Lhuid struck in the 94th minute to force extra time, sparking wild celebrations among the Nongkseh supporters. Both teams had chances thereafter, with Khrawkupar Jana missing from close range and Wanteilang once again denying Hardy Cliff Nongbri.
Lajong were dealt a further blow late in extra time when Samchaphrang Lato was sent off for a second booking, leaving his side to defend with ten men. With penalties approaching, Nongkseh found the winner in dramatic fashion. Kynsaibor released Shano, whose clever touch set up Hardy Cliff Nongbri to beat his marker and finish low past the goalkeeper in the 120th minute.
The final whistle confirmed a landmark title for Nongkseh, following their promotion to the Shillong Premier League as First Division champions earlier this year. The result also underlined a shift in the local football landscape, with traditional heavyweights Shillong Lajong, Langsning and Mawlai all falling to the new champions during the tournament.
At the prize distribution ceremony, attended by Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla and Mylliem MLA Ronnie Lyngdoh, Kynsaibor Lhuid was named Hello Meghalaya Player of the Final. Nongkseh lifted the trophy along with a cash prize of Rs 8 lakh, while runners-up Shillong Lajong received Rs 4 lakh.
Organised by the Shillong Sports Association with support from the Meghalaya government, the Champions Cup featured teams from all five men’s divisions and allowed lower-division sides to strengthen their squads through loan signings. After its inaugural edition, the tournament has already established itself as one of the most competitive football events in the state.
